Nats

Nats are spirits or deities in Burmese religious tradition, revered for their power to protect and harm.

Nats are spirits or deities revered in Burmese religious tradition. They play a significant role in the culture and spirituality of Myanmar (Burma). Beliefs regarding the Nats date back to the pre-Buddhist era and have been integrated into the Theravāda Buddhism practiced in the country. There are 37 principal Nats, each with their own legend, personality, and domain of influence. These spirits are often associated with natural places like mountains, trees, and rivers, as well as with historical events or heroic figures. Nats can be benevolent or malevolent, and they are often invoked for protection or to appease their anger. Shrines dedicated to Nats are common throughout Myanmar, and worship ceremonies include offerings of food, flowers, and drinks. One of the most famous festivals is the Taungbyone Festival, where thousands of devotees gather to pay homage to the Nats.
