Mosque

A mosque is a place of worship for Muslims, where collective prayers, religious teachings, and various community activities are held.

A mosque, derived from the Arabic word "masjid" meaning "place of prostration," is a building designated for prayer and meditation for Muslims. Mosques vary in size and architectural style, reflecting local traditions and historical periods of their construction. Common architectural elements include the minaret, from which the muezzin calls to prayer, the dome, symbolizing the celestial vault, and the mihrab, a niche indicating the qibla, the direction of Mecca. Mosques may also feature a courtyard (sahn), separate prayer halls for men and women, and madrassas for religious education. Besides the five daily prayers, mosques host significant events such as Friday prayers (Jumu'ah), religious festivals (Eid), and wedding ceremonies. Some historic mosques, like the Blue Mosque in Istanbul or the Great Mosque of Kairouan, are also important tourist sites, attracting visitors for their magnificent architecture and cultural significance.
