Term Definition
maristan

The maristan was a hospital in the medieval Islamic world, providing treatment for both physical and mental illnesses while serving as a center for medical education.

The maristan, derived from the Persian term meaning "place of healing," referred to hospitals in the medieval Islamic world. These institutions were open to people of all faiths and often funded by waqfs (religious endowments). Maristans provided treatment for a wide range of conditions, including physical, mental, and infectious diseases, with separate wards for different ailments.

Beyond their healthcare role, maristans also served as centers of medical learning, hosting libraries, lectures, and research. Famous maristans, such as the one built by Qalawun in Cairo, stand as remarkable examples of Islamic architecture, blending functionality with artistic design.
