Term Definition
kshatriya

Kshatriyas were the warrior and ruling class in the traditional varna system of ancient India, playing a key role in protecting and governing kingdoms.

In ancient Indian society, Kshatriyas represented the second varna (social class) after the Brahmins. Their primary role was to protect the kingdom and govern during times of peace. They included kings, princes, generals, and warriors. According to ancient texts like the Manusmṛti and the Bhagavad-Gītā, their duty (dharma) involved courage, honor, and adherence to religious and political laws. Their military training was rigorous, covering weaponry, warfare strategies, and governance principles. Over time, the status of Kshatriyas evolved, particularly with the emergence of new dynasties and transformations in the caste system due to conquests and social reforms.
