| kora | In Tibetan Buddhism, the kora is the ritual circumambulation of a sacred site. This devotional walk, performed in a clockwise direction, is one of the most widespread religious practices in the Himalayan world. The word kora comes from Tibetan and literally means “to go around” or “to circle.” It refers to a ritual practice consisting of walking around a sacred monument, monastery, temple, or even a mountain considered holy. This circumambulation is always performed in a clockwise direction, keeping the sacred object on the right side of the body, which is regarded as the side of honor and purity. The kora is a simple and accessible act of devotion. It may be performed by monks, pilgrims, or local residents at any time of day. Some devotees recite mantras as they walk, spin prayer wheels, or count the number of circuits they complete. Each circumambulation is considered a meritorious act that contributes to the accumulation of spiritual merit and the purification of negative actions. In its simplest form, the kora consists of a steady and meditative walk around the monument. However, some practitioners adopt a more demanding form based on repeated prostrations. They kneel, stretch their bodies fully on the ground, stand up again, take a few steps forward, and repeat the movement. This slower and physically demanding practice symbolizes humility and the abandonment of ego. It is regarded as particularly meritorious. In the Tibetan and Himalayan world, the kora is not limited to isolated monuments. Certain sacred mountains, especially in Tibet and Ladakh, are the object of long circumambulations that may take several days. In these cases, the kora becomes a true pilgrimage. Around major stupas, such as the one at Boudhanath in Kathmandu, the kora is part of everyday life. From early morning until night, devotees circle the monument, creating a continuous flow of prayer and meditation. This constant movement gives the site a distinctive spiritual atmosphere, where religious practice blends with urban life. |
