Term Definition
jalebi
Jalebi is a traditional South Asian sweet, easily recognized by its spiral shape and bright orange color.

Jalebi is a very popular sweet in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and other parts of South Asia, as well as in the Middle East and East Africa where it spread through trade routes. It is made by deep-frying a wheat flour batter (maida) into spirals or interconnected circles, which are then soaked in sugar syrup often flavored with saffron or cardamom.

It can be eaten hot or cold, commonly paired with curd or warm milk, and is especially popular during religious festivals, weddings, or as a street snack. Its origins are linked to Persian cuisine, where a similar sweet called “zalabiya” is mentioned in medieval texts. Over time, jalebi became firmly integrated into Indian culinary culture as a symbol of festivity and sharing.
