Term Definition
in the round

Sculpture in the round refers to a fully three-dimensional artwork, entirely detached from any background and visible from all sides.

Sculpture in the round is a sculptural technique in which the represented form is completely separated from any background or support. Unlike relief sculpture, which remains attached to a flat surface, a sculpture in the round is conceived as an autonomous object that occupies space and can be viewed from all directions.

This technique is typically used with durable materials such as stone, wood, or bronze. Examples of sculpture in the round appear throughout history, from Greco-Roman antiquity to Asian, African, and European traditions. It is commonly employed for religious figures, royal portraits, or decorative architectural elements.

In architectural settings, figures carved in the round may be integrated into a façade or structural element while retaining their full three-dimensionality. A notable example is the presence of elephant statues flanking the entrances of some Indian caves: though part of the architectural context, these sculptures clearly project as independent volumes.
