| crepidoma | The crepidoma is the raised base on which a Greek temple rests, consisting of multiple levels of steps. The crepidoma, a key element in Greek temple architecture, is a platform-like structure that supports the entire building. It is made up of several levels of steps called the "stereobate" (the lower level) and the "stylobate" (the upper level on which the columns stand). This elevation not only emphasized the temple's importance but also protected the structure from water infiltration and ground irregularities. The crepidoma also facilitated access to the temple while enhancing its imposing and monumental character. |
