Term Definition
barbarian kingdoms

The term "barbarian kingdoms" refers to the states established by non-Roman peoples in Europe following the fall of the Western Roman Empire in the 5th century.

The barbarian kingdoms, formed following the disintegration of the Western Roman Empire, included various peoples such as the Ostrogoths, Visigoths, Franks, and Vandals. These new kingdoms gradually settled in Roman territories, bringing their own culture and social organization. While adopting many aspects of Roman culture, including Christianity and certain forms of government, they also retained elements of their Germanic traditions. The period of the barbarian kingdoms was marked by frequent wars, alliances, and religious conversions, playing a crucial role in the transition from the ancient world to the European Middle Ages.
