| architrave | The architrave is an essential structural element in classical architecture, positioned directly above the columns. The architrave is the lowest part of the entablature in classical architecture, resting directly on the capitals of the columns. This horizontal component can be simple or consist of several layers, depending on the architectural style (Doric, Ionic, or Corinthian). The architrave serves not only a structural purpose by supporting the weight of the frieze and cornice above but also plays a significant aesthetic role, defining the visual of facades. In non-classical architectures, such as those in some Asian regions, the architrave may also serve as a major decorative support. |
