| onager | The onager is a wild Asiatic equid, closely related to the donkey. The onager (Equus hemionus), also known as the Asiatic wild ass, is a mammal belonging to the equid family. It is slightly larger and more slender than the domestic donkey, with a coat ranging from sandy beige to reddish-brown. Historically widespread across Central Asia and the Middle East, the onager has seen its range drastically reduced due to hunting, competition with livestock, and habitat degradation. Several subspecies are recognized, including the Persian onager (Equus hemionus onager) and the Indian wild ass (Equus hemionus khur). The latter is protected within the Little Rann of Kutch in Gujarat, where one of the last viable populations survives. The onager is emblematic of adaptation to harsh semi-desert environments, roaming in groups in search of water and sparse vegetation. |
