| atonism | Atonism refers to the monotheistic worship centered on the solar disk Aton, initiated by Pharaoh Akhenaton during the 18th Egyptian dynasty. Atonism is a form of monotheistic worship established by Pharaoh Akhenaton, who ruled from 1353 to 1336 BC. This religion is characterized by the exclusive worship of Aton, the solar disk, regarded as the sole deity. Akhenaton initiated the eradication of other Egyptian gods' cults, promoting Aton as the universal creator. Atonism significantly influenced the era's art and culture, introducing a more realistic and individualized style in artistic depictions. However, after Akhenaton's death, his successor Tutankhamun restored the old polytheistic order, and the traces of Atonism were largely erased from official records. |
