The archaeological remains of Nalanda are those of the oldest university on the Indian subcontinent.

It is a monastic institution that was in uninterrupted activity for more than 800 years over the period spanning from the 3rd century BC to around the year 1300.

Nalanda was sacked by an army of the Mamluk dynasty of the Sultan of Delhi and was abandoned following this invasion.

The ruins remained underground until the beginning of the 20th century.
