The banks of the Jordan, whether on the Jordanian side or the Israeli side, are full of places mentioned in the Bible.

Mount Nebo

When you reach the top of Mount Nebo, which rises to 817 meters, you have a panoramic view of the Jordan. But also on a strange statue resembling a caduceus, symbol of medicine. The caduceus is one of the attributes of the god Hermes used to heal snakebites.

Hermes, god of Greek mythology, probably never set foot on Mount Nebo in Jordan. But what the symbol of Hermes is to Greek mythology, the brass serpent of Moses is to Christian and Jewish mythology, recorded in the Holy Bible.

This synbol of Moses, the prophet who brought the Jewish people out of Egypt and whom God made wander for 40 years in the desert because the people began to worship an idol, a golden calf. God in his jealous anger decided that Moses should get lost in the desert with his people and forbade Moses to enter the promised land. However, as Moses was not really unworthy, he was allowed to see the "land where water and honey flow", but not to enter it.

The part of historical truth and that of the myth being difficult to establish, we cannot affirm that Mount Nebo in Jordan is indeed the one mentioned in the bible. Just as we cannot say that Moses existed, nor that he died at 120 years old as the Bible claims ...

Still, the place is magnificent and the view of the Joudain from its summit is impressive.

The belief that this biblical episode went well there is not new.

As early as the 4th century AD, a sanctuary was built on top of Mount Nebo. This primitive building evolved over the centuries to become a basilica at the beginning of the 7th century. The first church was built there because Christians believed it was where Moses was buried.

A mosaic school seems to have developed there around the 6th and 7th century in the diocese of Madaba, and some beautiful mosaics can be seen in the current basilica at the top of Mount Nebo.

about the place, Mount Nebo:

According to the Bible (Deuteronomy), Moses, then 120 years old, ascended Mount Nebo located in the west of present-day Jordan. It was there that God brought him to show him the Promised Land, the land of Canaan. However, since Moses disobeyed God when he came out of Egypt, God told him that he would not tread on the promised land. And Moses died on the hill Nebo.

Archelogic excavations carried out at the beginning of the 20th century brought to light the remains of a Byzantine church and a monastery dating from the 5th century AD. These buildings contained magnificent mosaics.

The basilica was completely renovated at the start of the 21st century.

Spoken comments in the film:

After leaving Egypt and many adventures explained in detail in the bible, Moses arrived on Mount Nebo with a splendid view of the Jordan Valley.

As Moses had done some nonsense the details of which are recorded in the sacred book, God told him that he could look at the Promised Land with his eyes ... but not enter it.

Moses therefore died at the age of 120 at the top of Mount Nebo. No guarantee that the place where Moses died is actually here, but it is here that a basilica dedicated to Moses was built around the 5th century AD and this basilica (recently restored) contains magnificent mosaics.
