The brackish lakes of South India have become a hotspot for tourism in South India. Here are some pictures of Vembanad Lake and the banks of the Meenachi River

about the place, Kottayam :

Near the town of Kottayam (meaning: "inside a fort") stretches Vembanad Lake and a network of waterways called Backwaters. They are in fact complex sets of lagoons, lakes fed by rivers or streams, a mixture of fresh water and sea water which sometimes mix. These natural ways were modified by the man who developed there dykes and navigable ways for the transport of the goods.
