History of Camagüey

As was not uncommon in Cuba during the time of colonization and piracy which very often was its companion, coastal towns of Cuba have emptied of their inhabitants in favor of new locations inland and put themselves safe from filibusters.

So Camagüey was originally built on the northern coast of Cuba, but was forced to abandon the coastline. Initially the city was called Santa Maria del Puerto de Principe. A new town was built on the site of a Taino village which bore the name Camaguebax and a deformation of this local name served to baptize the new locality.

The town lived mainly from the cattle trade and had some sugar plantations.

Camagüey today

Camagüey escapes a little from the traditional tourist circuits, which allows you to stroll quietly in the colonial streets of the city center.

Like many cities in Cuba, bronze statues adorn the city.

And as is often the case with the Spanish colonies, the city is full of Catholic churches.

An internationally renowned artist has set up her studio in the Plaza del Carmen. This artist is called Martha Jimenez and a detour through her studio is always a very pleasant moment.
