Bikaner, Deshnoke, Mandawa, Khichan, Sam desert • India, Rajasthan (EN)

Here is the fourth part of the film devoted to our trip to India in November 2015. It is also the last concerning Rajasthan. The rest of the trip will be Varanasi (Bénarès).

About the 5 places in this film

The city Bikaner was founded in 1448 by Rao Bika to whom it owes its name. It has nearly 700,000 inhabitants. Located in the Thar Desert and on one of the Silk Roads, it offers among other tourist interests the magnificent Junagarh Fort.

Deshnoke is a small town in Rajasthan with about 20,000 inhabitants. It is famous for its Karni Mata temple which was built around 600 years ago. This temple is dedicated to rats and houses 25,000 of them. Legend has it that Laxman, the son of Karni Mata, a Hindu warrior, reincarnation of the goddess Durga, drowned and Karni Mata implored Yama to resuscitate him, which he refused. Later he agreed to revive Laxman, as well as all of Karni Mata's male children in the form of rats.

Karni Mata would therefore have had 25,000 male children ... but hey, she was not of divine origin for nothing.

The small town of Mandawa in Rajasthan which has less than 30,000 inhabitants is famous for its havelis. The havelis are the richly decorated homes of the merchants who prospered before the Silk Road was abandoned by the caravans.

Phalodi is a small town in Rajasthan which would have remained in the shadows if damselfish cranes had not decided to stop there during their migration.

Sam Sand Dunes Camp is a corner of the desert designed so that tourists can take a camel ride and listen to the music of local artists.
