Bihar

Bihar is a state in eastern India with nearly 110 million inhabitants, making it the third largest in terms of population. The state is predominantly rural and more than 85% of Biharis live in the countryside.

If Bihar is currently one of the poorest states of the Indian confederation, it is also one of the states with the richest history.

Religions

Bihar is the birthplace of two of India's oldest religions, Buddhism and Jainism.

Buddhism

If Buddhism has become very much in the minority in India, this has not always been the case. A Buddha is a man who has attained nirvana, absolute wisdom. However, when we talk about Buddha we are referring to Siddhartha Gautama, a spiritual leader who was born in the 5th or 6th century BCE in Nepal and who achieved nirvana through asceticism and meditation under a bodhi tree. , in Bodhgaya in the present state of Bihar.

Among the prominent historical figures of Bihar, we can also cite Emperor Ashoka, who adopted the non-violent principles of Buddha following the very murderous conquest of Kalinga, a dynasty rivaling that of Ashoka, the Maurya. It was also Emperor Ashoka who built the first temple of Bodhgaya in the 3rd century BC.

Besides Bodhgaya where Buddha found enlightenment, Bihar has other very important places for Buddhists: Rajgir, a place where Buddha gave many sermons and Nalanda, seat of an important Buddhist university which radiated for nearly 10 centuries beyond Indian borders, at the beginning of our era.

Jainism

Jainism is significantly older than Buddhism, since its origins date back to the 10th or 9th century BC. This religion, advocating non-violence and a respect for life taken to the extreme. Mahavira, the twenty-fourth tirthankara (Jain spiritual master who achieved nirvana) who breathed new life into Jainism around the 6th century BC was born in Bihar as well.

Sikhisme

Patna, the capital of Bihar, is a holy city of Sikkhism. The city saw the birth of the last guru of Sikkhism, Gobind Singh. The Patna gurdwara, built at the place of birth of Gobind Singh is one of the 5 takths (main temples of Sikkism)
