India - Kumbh Mela 2016 in Ujjain • Madhya Pradesh • Maharashtra • Goa

Trip Kumbh Mela 2016

Our first trip to India, Rajasthan and Varanasi, left us with an excellent memory and it was time to discover the less touristy aspects of the mainland.

So when we saw a proposal for a trip to attend Kumbh Mela, the largest Hindu festival in the world, we did not hesitate long. The presence of 30 million faithful did not stop us and we came back with lasting memories. These more mystical and stranger Naga Sadhus than the others never leave indifferent.

This time we landed in Mumbai and went towards Ujjain where the festival was taking place that year, passing through Indore. But Ujjain and Indore are not enough for them to make a trip of 3 weeks ...

So we visited Goa (a city which remained strangely Portuguese) and the ancient capital Mandu of the Paramaras dynasty around the year 1000.

After Mandu which left us with excellent memories, not only thanks to its architectural gems but also by the friendliness of its inhabitants, the pleasure of discovery was going to go up a notch.

The Ajanta and Ellora caves in Maharashtra near Aurangabad were dug in granite at the beginning of our era. A wonder from all points of view. Both technical, architectural and aesthetic, the excavation of these gigantic temples remains a mystery for archaeologists.
